Iwate Kaihatsu Railways located in Ofunato, Japan operates locomotives that haul cement from the local mine out of the valley to the processing plant in town. Each locomotive hauls 18 cement cars capable of carrying 35 tons each. On a normal day, they make 13 trips from the mine to the plant and back. Complaints from the residents of Ofunato about the excessive engine exhaust smoke each morning spurred Iwate to find a way to reduce their impact on the local environment.
Hotstart was recently selected by the Northeast States for Coordinate Air Use Management (NESCAUM) to provide Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for 27 of 29 locomotives and 6 railroads that are part of the New England Locomotive Idle Reduction Project. NESCAUM, through a grant provided by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will use Hotstart’s APU technology to reduce locomotive idling and will help save railroads money and fuel and reduce emissions. NESCAUM matched the $850,000 EPA grant by 23 percent.
Hotstart was selected by Montana Rail Link (MRL) to provide a new series of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) to 34 locomotives that a recent report shows saved the railroad money and fuel and drastically reduced emissions. With this technology, MRL will eliminate 122,442 tons of emissions and save 10,657,523 gallons of fuel over the next 11 years.
