Railroad

Locomotives are often left idling because of difficulties restarting the prime mover when it is cold. In freezing temperatures, locomotives must be left idling to prevent water dumping and engine freeze-up (locomotive engines do not typically use anti-freeze). Problems with idling include wasted fuel and oil, wet-stacking, emissions, noise and engine wear. How much fuel is wasted? How much does it cost? Try our calculator to learn more.

Since 1965, HOTSTART has been helping railroads stop idling and save money. By equipping a locomotive with a HOTSTART engine heater, the locomotive can be shut down and the heater will keep the engine above 100°F allowing for an easy restart. Check out our complete line of idle reduction solutions including electric and diesel-driven heaters (or APUs) with optional AESS systems.
